NAPLES PORT
Naples Full Day Tour
Tour 2 - A day in Naples
“See Naples and Die” – Goethe
Naples originated with the founding of Cumae, a Greek Colony in 1056 B.C.,. The beautiful Bay of Naples was admired, loved and conquered by all. Music, sunshine and love best describe the feeling and the tradition of the Neopolitans. Naples is a permanent Italian theatre, there Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that erupted in 79 AD and covered Pompei and Herculaneum, is one of the few active vulcanos today in the world. Naples offers attractions all year long, its warm and bright sunshine, its amphitheatre bay, and its sumptuous surroundings. It is a city of contradictions and an immense variety of cultural influences but still holds on to its deep roots and traditions.

We start the visit by going directly to its origins- the historical center- its womb.
The Cathedral of Naples, the “Duomo”, which has a beautiful door and columns of African and Egyptian granite that once graced the temple of Apollo and contains the celebrated blood of San Gennaro, or Janarius. It is preserved in two little ampullas in a Silver reliquery and three times a year it miraculously liquifies to the great joy of Neopolitans. who gather every year to wait for the event. To see the 17th cent. Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro is a must. You will also visit the pre-existing structures underneath the Duomo that date back to the Greek and Roman periods of Naples.
Visit of the Pio Monte Misericordia complex founded in 1601, one of the city’s oldest charitable organizations. The octogonal church has on its main altar Caravaggio’s famous masterpiece depicting the “Acts of Compassion”.
San Gregorio Armeno, the center of the Greco-Roman city where the Nativity Scene artisans create the most famous of all and the most characteristic ones since the 16th century. It is a lively, bustling neighborhood.
Visit Spaccanapoli, Tribunali, the spyderweb alleys, Piazza of the Gesù Nuovo, the Steeple of the Immacolata and not far away is the austere church of Santa Chiara, both Gothic and Baroque in style- A stroll in the cloister of the Poor Clares is not to be missed. Here, all of a sudden Naples becomes silent, all that commotion and vivacious singing of words disappears and the hysteria profumes the air.
A Neopolitan Pizza distinguishes itself from those in the rest of the world. Now is the time to have a real Neopolitan Pizza lunch. This is where the Pizza Margherita named for the Queen of Italy was born.
After lunch we leave the alleyways of the historical center to visit the Naples of the 1800’s and have a super Neopolitan coffee in the famous Caffe Gambrinus in Piazza del Plebiscito, neoclassical in style and the largest in the city, with a backdrop of cultural events and concerts. Turn around and see the Royal Palace begun in the 1600’s. What a sight all at once.
See Piazza Trieste and Piazza Trento and then on to Umberto I Gallery dting to of the late 19th century, window shop on Via Roma with its stylish shops. Then see the oldest opera house in the world, the San Carlo Theatre.
Now back in the van for a ride up to Posillipo for a panoramic view of the entire Gulf, Vesuvius and the islands. See the Castel dell’Ovo, once a monastary, today restaurants and yacht clubs. This is the famous Santa Lucia waterfront. Maybe your guide will sing you the song... just ask.
From the Vigiliano Park we now work our way down to Via Caracciolo along the coast road and back to the ship.
Now you know why Goethe said “ See Naples and Die”
Enjoy a glass of prosecco wine on the way back to your ship.
